The Royal Photographic Society

The Royal Photographic Society was founded in 1853 'to promote the Art and Science of Photography', a mission it continues to this day in the United Kingdom and through its considerable overseas membership.

As an Educational Charity, it also runs an active education programme with schools and colleges, as well as organising weekend workshops and lecture series across a very broad spectrum of photographic interest.

There is an exhibition of Society member's work shown each month at Fenton House, the headquarters of The Society in Bath. For details of the current exhibition, see www.rps.org/fenton-house. Opening times are Monday to Friday 09.30 - 16.30. The Society also stages three major touring photographic exhibitions: The International Print Exhibition and The International Projected Image Exhibition are held annually and The Members' Exhibition is held biennially.

Membership is open to everyone interested in photography: be they amateur or professional, artist or scientist, young or old.  As well as becoming a member of The Society itself, many members also join one or more specialist groups which concentrate more closely upon their chosen interests within the medium: from digital imaging to fine printing, nature photography to contemporary practice, pictorialism to imaging science, the moving image and many more.

Members are invited to take up the challenge of The Society's Distinctions and have their knowledge and practical abilities recognised.  The three levels are Licentiateship, Associateship, and Fellowship.

Through the active online community and the Regional and Special Interest Group Events, members can share, learn and develop their technical, visual and creative skills.  Every UK member is allocated to a geographical Region by postcode.  Regions and Groups have meetings, exhibitions and competitions and publish their own newsletters and magazines.

Members keep in contact with The Society through the RPS Journal, which is distributed free of charge ten times a year and features Society news, feature interviews with leading international photographers, book and exhibition reviews and articles on techniques.

The Society's remit is to promote the art and science of photography with the belief that no one is too young or too old to learn and enjoy image making and appreciation.

Photography, like most things, is ever changing and modern techniques are taking it to new extremes which were once not thought possible.  The Royal Photographic Society aims to keep up with these changes by providing information, training and advice for all those with a keen interest in photography from the amateur enthusiast to the seasoned professional.

The Society will continue its overall aim to promote high standards in photography in a broad and accessible way.  It now has a purpose built lecture theatre and education suite fitted out with equipment and software for digital imaging.  This enables The Society to deliver a programme of practical educational courses and events for members and non-members throughout the year.

For further information on workshops and lectures organised by The Society in the Bath area please visit www.rps.org/workshops

For workshops organised by the  RPS Groups and Regions please visit www.rps.org/events

The Royal Photographic Society is well respected for its outstanding achievement in education.  Although the majority of its work focuses on supporting and organising practical workshops/lectures it also organises community projects and work in schools and colleges.  The Society is also proud to host and support the annual Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award Photographic Residency.

The Society plans to continue with its investment into formal and informal education using its wealth of resources from its historical roots including the 250,000 images and artefacts from its world famous Collection now housed at the National Media Museum in Bradford.
